An interview with Alberto Gil Jimenez

“There's a vast amount of molecular data—what’s missing is the ability to quantify and interpret it effectively. That’s where bioinformatics comes in."

April 2025

In April 2025, Alberto joined Tzu Cancer Therapeutics as our second bioinformatician. Originally from Spain, his path into bioinformatics wasn’t straightforward, but driven by curiosity and a desire to combine science with data.

With two bachelor’s degrees in physics and chemistry completed in Barcelona, he discovered bioinformatics during an internship focused on protein studies. What began as a small project opened the door to data analysis and coding. “I didn’t really enjoy working in the lab,” he recalls, “but when I got introduced to bioinformatics, it just clicked.” Although the choice to pivot was risky to some extent—especially with limited coding experience and only a couple of biology courses—it turned out to be the right one.

Alberto later completed his PhD in cancer research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), having moved to the Netherlands nine years ago to follow his dream of working abroad. This shift marked a significant milestone both personally and professionally.

“Bioinformatics is becoming increasingly vital in the fight against cancer,” Alberto explains. “There’s a vast amount of molecular datawhat’s missing is the ability to quantify and interpret it effectively. That’s where bioinformatics comes in. There’s so much data to explore, and someone has to make sense of it.”

Tzu’s research-driven mission and its focus on cancer therapeutics felt like a natural fit. “The topic and the way of working at Tzu align well with my background. It’s a continuation of what I have done.” His role includes maintaining the company’s bioinformatics infrastructure and developing new analytical strategies to uncover therapeutic targets.

His goals at Tzu include building a robust analysis pipeline and contributing novel findings to the field. He’s also eager to grow beyond technical skills—developing leadership and communication capabilities.

Outside of work, Alberto is the committee leader of the Diversity committee of a network for Spanish scientists in the Netherlands. He also enjoys fitness for mental balance and has recently taken up music production and DJ’ing.

With his deep expertise, Alberto is a key force in Tzu’s mission to push the boundaries of cancer research!
